Extended Outdoor Applications
The new TBEN-S I/O devices are designed for an expanded temperature range of -40°C to +70°C. This opens up niche applications that previously could only be addressed by the BLcompact remote I/O series.
In addition to IP67, TBEN-S devices can be used for applications requiring IP65 and IP69K ratings, allowing TBEN-S modules to serve as complete outdoor solutions for installations outside of cabinets.
Multiprotocol Support
Like previous RIO systems with “Multiprotocol” functionality, TBEN-S modular devices continue the RIO line’s support of multiple industrial Ethernet protocols: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP, all in a single module. Protocol selection occurs automatically—when power is applied, the device enters “tracking” mode, detecting Ethernet traffic to identify connection requests from any of the three supported master devices that may be present on the network.
Optimized Housing Design
The TBEN-S series housing design is based on the modular piconet® I/O system, which is one of the most compact outdoor systems. The TBEN-S series I/O devices are ultra-compact for this type of device, with dimensions of just 32 x 144 x 31 mm. The housing design has been improved over the piconet® modular systems of a similar form factor, using only two M4 screw holes, making installation easier, especially on popular aluminum profiles like ITEM or BOSCH.
Grounding design has also evolved; now, both instrumental (Ethernet bus) and protective grounding can be provided for each module individually, increasing system noise immunity.
Thanks to “Multiprotocol” technology in the TBEN-S modular systems, Turck has become one of the first manufacturers to eliminate the need for traditional gateway devices for data conversion, using integrated Ethernet switches. Each TBEN-S module can connect directly to the Ethernet Fieldbus in a bus topology. The cost of implementing this multiprotocol platform is comparable to connecting traditional expandable I/O systems to Ethernet Fieldbus, eliminating the need for field gateways without increasing system deployment costs.
Optimized Diagnostics
The diagnostic capabilities of the new TBEN-S modules have been significantly improved over the piconet® systems. On one hand, existing PROFINET data exchange mechanisms are fully utilized in TBEN-S devices to provide per-channel diagnostics and alarms.
For example, error messages from the TBEN-S device are displayed as plain text with a timestamp in Siemens controllers and PLC web servers without requiring additional programming. Furthermore, the TBEN-S device’s integrated web server allows Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP™ networks to display diagnostic messages in text format and save data in a diagnostic buffer.
Network diagnostics are also available, providing connection quality information (error counter) for each individual port, which is already used in PROFINET networks.
Connection Features
Like the piconet® systems, standard M8 connectors are used for connecting the Ethernet bus, power, and field signals. This allows commonly used piconet® cabling to also be applied to TBEN-S modules.
Important: Only special M8 pre-assembled cordsets (cable assemblies) meeting Ethernet CAT-5 standards should be used for Ethernet connections.
I/O Systems with a Temperature Range of -40 to +70°C
TURCK has developed a new generation of modular (block) remote I/O systems with an extended operating temperature range of -40 to +70°C: the TBEN (Ethernet) and TBDP (Profibus DP) series. These modules, featuring IP67/IP69K protection ratings, are ideal for outdoor installations as complete Outdoor solutions.
The TBEN series, similar to previous RIO generation systems with “Multiprotocol” functionality, advances the RIO device line by supporting multiple industrial Ethernet protocols—EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP—in a single module. This flexibility allows for a more versatile and efficient implementation across various industrial network environments.
Automatic Protocol Selection and Prioritization Features
With TURCK’s TBEN and TBDP modular I/O systems, protocol selection is managed automatically upon power-up. During initialization, “Multiprotocol”-enabled devices enter a “tracking” mode, analyzing Ethernet traffic to detect connection requests from any of the three supported master devices (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP) that may be present in the network. For Profinet and EtherNet/IP networks, the TBEN series modules support “priority initialization” through QuickConnect (QC) for EtherNet/IP and FastStartup (FSU) for PROFINET, as well as bus redundancy (MRP and DLR).
The discrete output channels on both series can handle current loads up to 2A per channel, which simplifies device inventory and minimizes the need for devices with varying output current capacities. Standard grounding configurations are fully supported without significant design alterations in the modules.
Key Features and Advantages of RIO Modular Systems – TBEN and TBDP:
- Built-in “Multiprotocol” functionality: Allows simultaneous support of multiple industrial Ethernet protocols—EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP—within a single RIO module (for TBEN series).

Non-contact inductive encoders with IP69K
Turck presents the first non-contact and absolutely wear-free universal encoder, always maintaining its seal. By releasing the RI360P-QR24 series, Turck became the first manufacturer on the market to offer a non-contact inductive universal encoder with high resolution that is absolutely wear-free in operation and at the same time insensitive to magnetic fields.
The encoder sensor and positioning element are completely encapsulated and form two independent, completely sealed units that operate contactlessly. This prevents vibrations and impacts from being transmitted from the shaft to the encoder, and the design eliminates bearings and seals. This gives the RI360P-QR24 a technical advantage over both optical and magnetic encoders. Thanks to the high IP69K protection class and a resolution of over 18 bits, machine downtimes and maintenance costs associated with encoder wear are a thing of the past, even for high-precision and high-speed applications.
Turck has developed a revolutionary encoder parameterization and mounting concept. This makes the RI360P-QR24 a universal encoder for all standard industrial applications. The version with SSI interface can be configured as an absolute single-turn or multi-turn encoder. A model with a widely used incremental output and a model with analog outputs of 0…10 V and 4…20 mA are also available. The encoder mounting concept also expands its scope of application: adapter sleeves allow mounting on any standard shaft with a diameter of up to 20 mm.
Multiprotocol I/O systems
Turck, as a pioneer in this field, presents the innovative “Multiprotocol” concept for remote I/O (RIO) systems based on Industrial Ethernet industrial protocols.
This concept, based on a single RIO device, provides support for several industrial Ethernet protocols: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET and Modbus TCP.
The choice of the communication protocol can also be done manually – via the built-in WEB browser of the RIO devices by deactivating unused protocols.
Each of the devices has a built-in Ethernet switch on board, thus allowing the use of a linear network topology – similar to “classic” industrial field networks.
In addition, “Multiprotocol” RIO supports the so-called “priority initialization”: QuickConnect mode for EtherNet/IP and FastStartup mode for PROFINET.
In QuickConnect mode, the device is initialized in the network in less than 90 milliseconds, in FastStartup mode – in less than 150 milliseconds.
These characteristics can become a profitable advantage when using “Multiprotocol” RIO in robotic systems – where minimum switching speed is important.
Thus, the following can be attributed to the main advantages of the new devices:
Reduction of the product range (important in the context of project unification);
Expanded redundancy (the ability to quickly switch to alternative exchange protocols);
Unified system concept.
To date, “Multiprotocol” RIO is presented within the following product lines of remote I/O systems:
modular expandable systems BL20 in IP20 design
modular expandable systems BL67 in IP67 design
stand-alone field stations in IP67 design
stand-alone field stations of remote I/O BL compact in IP67 design
